Zimmerman-Livonia Fire Department

About Us

About the Zimmerman/Livonia Fire District

The Zimmerman Fire Department has proudly served the community since 1958, when a determined group of 15 local men came together with a shared vision of protecting their neighbors. Their commitment was so strong that they personally borrowed $5,000 to purchase the department's very first fire truck—a remarkable investment that laid the foundation for generations of service.

In 2004, the department became the Zimmerman/Livonia Fire District following the formation of a joint operating fire board between the City of Zimmerman and Livonia Township. Today, the district proudly protects more than 12,000 residents across 78 square miles, serving the City of Zimmerman, Livonia Township, and portions of Orrock, Blue Hill, and Stanford Townships.

Operating from a centrally located station at 26140 136th Street NW in Zimmerman, the Fire District is strategically positioned to provide rapid emergency response throughout the service area. The facility is also home to the Station 1 Event Center, a versatile venue available for community events and private rentals.

The Zimmerman/Livonia Fire District provides a wide range of emergency services, including fire suppression, rescue operations, and specialized radiation decontamination response in support of the Monticello nuclear power plant. Whatever the emergency, our mission is to respond with professionalism, preparedness, and compassion.

Protecting the community goes beyond emergency response. Fire prevention and public education are at the heart of what we do. Throughout the year, firefighters and our Fire Prevention Specialist visit local schools, host station events, and provide hands-on safety education for families. During Fire Prevention Week each October, our Safe Escape House travels to elementary schools and preschools, teaching children valuable fire safety skills in an interactive and memorable way.

In 2008, the Fire District hired its first full-time Fire Chief, marking an important milestone in the department's growth. Today, the Chief leads a dedicated team of approximately 30 highly trained on-call firefighters. While each firefighter maintains a full-time career outside the department, they remain on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ready to answer the call whenever their community needs them. Their unwavering commitment, extensive training, and passion for service ensure the residents of the Zimmerman/Livonia Fire District receive exceptional emergency response every day.
